I have email on the domain I am moving to FASO. I changed the DNS before making provisions for my email. What do I do now?

If you have an existing domain email account (branded email account / personalized email account) that you have been using and you are moving your off-site domain to your FASO website account, it is important to make provisions for the email account BEFORE changing the nameservers to FASO's otherwise you risk not being able to access your email account which means not being able to send and/or receive emails.

If you jumped the gun and pointed your domain to FASO without making provisions for your email address, you may well have interrupted your email account (your email account has stopped working).

If this is the case, and you are NOT using a desktop email client such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, etc., you will want to follow the steps in this document in order to correct the issue with your email account.

NOTE: Setting up the email account with FASO will NOT automatically transfer any of your archived emails or your Contact list.

If you no longer have access to your domain email account, you have two choices depending upon the following 2 criteria.

1. Old, stored emails and contacts ARE NOT important.

If old emails and contacts are not important to you, set up your email account on the FASO servers.

For How To, see this FAQ: How do I set up and check a FASO domain email account?

Once the email account is set up, your email will start flowing once again within a few hours.

NOTE: If you get an error message when setting up the email account on the FASO servers, please Contact Support. We will make the necessary adjustments to your MX (Mail Exchange) records.

2. Old, stored emails and contacts ARE important.

Follow these steps:
(the exact steps may vary depending upon your provider)

1st: Manually move important archived emails and your contact list to your FASO email account:

  • Log into your domain registration account at the company where you registered your domain.
  • Change the nameservers back to their original settings.
This allows you to once again access your domain email account so that you can retrieve any saved emails and your contact list.
  • To save important archived emails (often saved in folders), email them to yourself or save them to a file/folder on your computer.
  • Export your contacts. See this FAQ:
How to Import Contacts Into Your FASO Email Account
You will be able to Import them after you set up the email account on our servers.

2nd: Set up your domain email account on FASO.
See this FAQ: How do I set up and check a FASO domain email account?

NOTE: If you get an error message when setting up the email account on the FASO servers, please Contact Support. We will make the necessary adjustments to your MX (Mail Exchange) records.

Once you have followed the above steps (email account set up on FASO, contacts and saved emails are taken care of) you can once again point your domain to FASO by changing the nameservers to the FASO nameservers:

  • Login to your domain account at the company where you registered your domain.
  • Change the DOMAIN NAME SERVERS to the FASO name servers:
    GRACE.NS.CLOUDFLARE.COM
    PABLO.NS.CLOUDFLARE.COM

After updating the nameservers, your off-site domain will begin to pull up your FASO website within a few hours.

For 24 hours after changing the nameservers, you will want to check email as you have been AS WELL AS from your FASO control panel. This will ensure that you do not miss any emails.

Once everything has settled (that 24 hour period), your email will be properly directed to the new email account set up through our provider.

Then you can update any settings in your desktop program or on your mobile devices. See:
Set Up Email on Mobile or Desktop Program

Cancel the old email provider.
